Hey guys! Looking to grab a used 2017 Honda CR-V AWD from a local importer in New Providence. It's a Japanese RHD spec. Since we had some serious street flooding lately, what should I look for to make sure this thing wasn't sitting in saltwater? The dealer claims it's fresh off the boat.
Pull the carpet in the driver footwell and check the seat rails. If you see white powdery corrosion on the aluminum or heavy rust on the steel bolts, it sat in water. Also smell the interior on a hot day—if it smells musty, walk away. Saltwater messes up modern Honda sensors and wiring harnesses. Once corrosion starts inside those electrical plugs, the car becomes a rolling nightmare.
I agree with the mechanic. My cousin bought a cheap import that looked clean outside, but the under-dash fuse box was completely green with corrosion. The car randomly cuts off while driving. Always spend the $100 to get a pre-purchase inspection at a proper shop in Nassau before handing over cash.
@242_Mechanic Thanks for the tip! I went down today and checked under the seats. The bolts actually look brand new, but I noticed a ton of marine grease sprayed on the suspension links underneath. Is that a common trick to hide rust here or just standard protection?
